Charitable impact
NIAB's mission is to provide independent science-based research and information to support, develop and promote agriculture and horticulture; helping the industry to fulfil its potential in supplying food and renewable resources, while respecting the natural environment.
NIAB delivers this by carrying out research to improve the productivity, efficiency and sustainability of crop production, which is then translated into industry and onto farm, across a range of products, services, events and information. Privatised in 1996, NIAB is a not-for-profit organisation with independent charitable status, receiving no core funding from government and re-investing any profits into future research.
Ultimately, NIAB occupies a unique space in the crop science landscape, spanning the entire crop improvement pipeline – from genetics and pre-breeding to applied agronomy, soil and environmental science, precision farming and knowledge transfer onto farm. The diversity of its funding sources means that they can be truly independent from government, industry and lobbying organisations. NIAB will continue to adapt, placing charitable objectives and its independence at the forefront of growing a strong, research-based enterprise.
